Betsy Book Bus

The Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation promotes early literacy efforts across the state of Tennessee by supporting and sustaining Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in all 95 counties. In Summer 2018, GBBF is partnering with three school systems in Northeast Tennessee to promote expanded engagement around books by launching summer book buses. Elizabethton City Schools will offer the Betsy Book Bus program in Elizabethton in Summer 2018 and for years to come as part of this initiative. The purpose of the program is to improve literacy outcomes in Elizabethton.

Without exposure to rich texts throughout the summer, many students fall behind academically. We want to level the playing field for these students and work as a state to m
eet the Read to Be Ready literacy goal of 75 percent of third grade students being proficient in reading by 2025.
GBBF, through an Appalachian Regional Commission Grant, is providing partial funding to launch these buses. ECS donated the bus and labor to outfit the interior, but we are depending on local sponsors to help us reach our goal. The total estimated cost of the program for staff and materials to outfit the bus is $17,012. The program is scheduled to begin in June 2018.

Tentative Schedule

The final Betsy Book Bus schedule including times and specific locations will be sent home with all children toward the end of the school year, and will also be available on this webpage, and on the ECS Facebook and Twitter pages. The schedule below is tentative to give parents an idea of which neighborhoods the bus will visit and at what times.
