School Closing & Snow Schedules

Schedule Change Announcements

The safety of your children is always our number one priority. During inclement weather, school administrators may announce the delay or closure of schools. Be sure to check the following media outlets when inclement weather is in the forecast, even during when temperatures are predicted to be near zero with wind chill.

We aim to announce schedule changes as soon as possible, either by 10:30 p.m. the prior evening or by 5:45 a.m. on the school day. If a delay does not allow enough time to clear roads or if conditions worsen, school closure may be announced by 7:30 a.m. Schedules changes will be announced using our Skyward Family Access calling system called Skylert (School Messenger). If you are not registered with Skyward, please click here to learn how to register, or call your child's school. Elizabethton City Schools reports schedule changes to the following local media outlets.

Delays help reduce the numbers of school closures and help ensure safe travel to and from school. They also allow city crews time to clear roads. Breakfast and lunch are served on delay days. Kindergarten will release at 2 p.m. on delay days. Delays schedules are as follows:

Delay Pre-K K-5 6-12
1 hour 9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. 8:45 a.m. - 2:45 p.m.
2 hour 10 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. 9:45 a.m. - 2:45 p.m.

Make-Up Days

The calendar is built to include 6 days of school closure. If more than 6 days are missed, the Director of Schools and Board of Education will make a decision on how to adjust the schedule. For this reason, parents are advised not to make summer vacation plans till after June 1.

Due to a large number of inclement weather events thus far in the 2017-2018 school year, Elizabethton City Schools has used all but one of the built-in inclement weather days.  As a result, we are developing a plan should additional days be needed to complete the school year.  Moving forward, should the need arise, the following days will be converted into regular student days:

  1. Professional Development Day February 20th
  2. Our second parent teacher conference day on February 19th (This day will be converted to a teacher workday scheduled for May 28th)
  3. Professional Development Day April 9th
  4. Professional Development Day May 14th
  5. Professional Development Day March 23rd

Since many families plan trips during Spring Break, our goal is to preserve those days in the calendar.  They will only be used as a last resort.  Should school need to be closed due to inclement weather, the Skylert School Messenger message you receive (call/text/email) will also include which day will be used to make up for the missed instructional time.  We will also send a reminder call a few days prior to any converted regular school day.

ECS respects parents' rights to keep their children home if they are concerned about inclement weather conditions. However, state law requires that students who are not present be marked absent. Procedures for making up work are the same as for other absences.

Bus drivers are instructed to utilize the safest routes on clear streets. This may cause bus schedules to vary slightly. Parents should advise their children to walk carefully to the bus if snow and ice have not yet been cleared from the walkway.

Extended School Program

The Extended School Program will attempt to operate on the days school is in session.  ESP does not operate when schools are closed due to bad weather.  Should schools close early, parents will be contacted and ESP will close. If children are released early for snow, or if school is closed due to bad weather, there will be no ESP.
