Kindergarten schedule to extend to full day

Kindergarten Full Day

Beginning in the 2017-18 school year, kindergartners in Elizabethton City Schools will no longer let out early. This is part of a strategy to increase instruction time and to improve early literacy.  The school day for kindergartners will be the same as grades 1-5, from 7:55 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Bus transportation will be provided at these times, and the ECS Transportation Director is making arrangements for additional traffic. Parents should check the bus routes on the district website for changes in their children's pickup and dropoff times at www.ecschools.net > Departments > Transportation > Bus Routes.

Most other districts in the Tennessee’s First District have transitioned to a full day for kindergartners, and administrators want to ensure Elizabethton students get the best possible start to their formative years in education. Data from the National Education Association shows that full-day kindergarten programs close achievement gaps between young children from minority and low-income families and their peers. This helps ensure all students can achieve academic, social and emotional success.

According to the NEA, full-day kindergarten programs demonstrate greater reading and mathematics gains than those in abbreviate programs. In addition, they support at-risk children and lower grade retention and dropout rates. ECS administrators hope parents will see how these goals will benefit their children on their paths to success before and after graduation.
