Betsy Book Bus summer program begins June 12

bus wrap

Posted On: Friday, June 1, 2018

The Betsy Book Bus routes are posted, and the bus is scheduled to hit the road on June 12. Children in multiple neighborhoods and summer programs in Elizabethton will have access to the thousands of books on board during the four weeks of the program this summer.

The bus has books on reading level from birth to adult and in many diverse genres. Books may be returned to the bus or added to a family's home library - there is no requirement to return books.

The goal is to get families reading together and to help prevent the summer slide that takes place when children are out of school and often don't have easy access to high quality literature. We want children and young people to be inspired by what they're reading and to "get carried away with books," which is the theme of the bus.

Teachers staffing the program include Director Carla Whiles, Brandie Maness, and Tammy Markland. Elizabethton City Schools thanks all sponsors and partners that made the bus possible including Governor's Books from Birth Foundation and Imagination Library, Tennessee College of Applied Technology at Elizabethton, Appalachian Regional Commission, Academy Sports + Outdoors, Northeast Community Credit Union, First Tennessee Development District, Niswonger Foundation, and Carter County Bank.
