Students elect third Student Liaison to Elizabethton Board of Education

Malana Griffey

Student voice continues to play an important role on the Elizabethton Board of Education with the election of the third student liaison. Malana Griffey will serve as a voice for students on the Board and a voice for the Board in school.

“I thought it was a really interesting position and that it would be really helpful for the students and the school board,” she said. “I think it’s an amazing way to help the school environment and to relay concerns or compliments to the board.”

Board member Susan Peters said this position has been a wonderful addition. “They bring a new and valued perspective to our board,” she said. “As a retired teacher, I particularly enjoy getting students’ perspectives on how they feel about things.”

Griffey hopes to represent the needs of all students by working with various groups like Student Government Association. She is a member of Key Club, Varsity Cheer Team, Watts Dance Studio’s Showcase Group, and is a Carter County Youth Leadership alumna.

This position was first suggested as part of the student-authored Bartleby proposal in the XQ Super School Project in 2015. The Board has been supportive of this idea and has worked alongside two liaisons – Cory Fitzsimmons (2016-2017), and Hannah Roaten (2017-2018). The liaison is a non-voting member that participates in Board discussions, and in the past has gathered student input through survey and conversations with peers.

Griffey said her main goal in this position is to improve the connection between the Board and students and to improve school climate in the whole school. “Having this position shows how amazing and blessed our school system and community are and how they value the school environment, education and experience in our schools.”
