Darnell speaking at conference

Last month, East Side's own Rachel Darnell was invited to speak on a panel at a Read to be Ready celebration in Knoxville with Education Commissioner Candice McQueen. The panel consisted of one teacher, one reading coach, and one reading coach consultant from east Tennessee.

"I was able to highlight the hard work of our students and teachers who are a part of the Read to be Ready initiative and discuss next steps in helping our students become proficient readers," said Darnell. "It was definitely an honor and a really cool experience."

Darnell teaches first grade and was recently selected to serve as the director of Camp Read-A-Lot for summer 2019. She has been a teacher in the program for the last two years.

Her experience and leadership skills are extremely valuable to our East Side students and teachers. She has presented at various early childhood and reading conferences and has planned and presented numerous professional development workshops for teachers. Prior to this conference, she recently served on the state’s R2BR Content Review Committee and served as a summer R2BR Camp trainer for the state.
