ELIZABETHTON, TN (WJHL) - An Elizabethton High School Junior, Karson Dillard, was the tenth student in program history to take a solo flight at Moody Aviation.
"I've always wanted to fly a plane since I was little, and I found out my grandpa was a pilot and it inspired me," Dillard said.
Karson began taking aerospace and aviation classes his freshman year. He spent nine hours of flight time instruction alongside Dan Mills, his aviation teacher, and Al Rice, his grandfather, in order to fly solo.
Dan Mills began teaching ten years ago and invited Karson's grandfather to join the program as a substitute teacher.
"Well this has just been a great privilege to fly with Karson," Rice said. "I've taken him on a few rides when we had gotten the opportunity, but the aviation program in that high school really laid an excellent foundation."
Karson hopes this experience will help him in the future.
"I hope to get a job with an aviation company or end up going to the Air Force if that does not happen," Karson said.
The aviation flight class at Elizabethton High School is part of the school's transportation, distribution, and logistics career education program.
