Student presentations and displays highlighted projects from throughout the year at Monday's Open House at EHS. Students were proud to share their work from immersive project-based learning (PBL) courses, but also from PBL coursework in their core classes.
The school-wide Bartleby expansion and designation of EHS as an XQ Super School has supported teachers already using PBL in their classes, and it has equipped all EHS teachers with the tools to implement PBL, thanks to training with the Buck Institute. Teachers are encouraged to offer inquiry-based, hands-on learning opportunities throughout the school.
Some examples of these projects that attendees learned about include businesses developed in the Entrepreneurship class and in the Business Management CTE program, children's storybooks developed in College Prep English, podcasts preserving local veterans' stories in the integrated English III and US History classes, ten-minute plays developed in Drama in conjunction with Barter Theatre, and a genetics study conducted in Biology.
The event was emceed by student Rachel Turner, and at its conclusion, Bartleby Director Alex Campbell gave a quick look into the future of the program. This will include:
- continuing integrated projects between Social Studies and English
- piloting integrated projects between Social Studies and Math
- introducing six new project-based electives next year
- increasing college dual credit opportunities
- increasing PBL training opportunities for teachers at EHS and with other schools like MIT, Stanford, Crosstown High, etc.
- increasing opportunities for students like college visits, student exchanges, summer workshops, job shadowing, internships, etc.
We look forward to creating this future and thank our community partners for their ongoing involvement and support through volunteering with our students, sponsoring projects, serving on project judging panels, and mentoring students as industry professionals!
