The Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) has released district-level results from the 2022-2023 Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP). These results provide data on student performance in English Language Arts (ELA), Math, Science, and Social Studies. Elizabethton City Schools’ (ECS) strong focus on academic growth has proven to be essential. Most of the results exhibit data that exceeds that of pre-pandemic years, last year’s data, as well as outperforming the state average in almost every category.
The TDOE measures achievement results in four expectation categories: Below, Approaching, Met, and Exceeds. In ELA, 46.7% of ECS students either met or exceeded expectations as compared to the state average of 38.1%. Math demonstrated that 46.2% met or exceeded expectations as compared to the state at 33.8%. ECS outperformed the state average in both science (52.5% ECS vs. 43.1% State) and social studies (55.9% ECS vs. 43.1%) as well.
Although the previously presented data is just a snapshot of ECS’ district performance, ECS demonstrated significant achievement gains in almost all subjects in multiple grade levels as well as various subgroups. ECS, Director of Schools, Richard VanHuss stated “I can’t begin to relay how proud I am of all our teachers and staff members across the district that worked so hard to maximize learning opportunities for our students. To see our students consistently outperform results from the previous year, which were very strong, speaks to the contributions of all our stakeholders. Our students and their families have also worked extremely hard, and the results speak for themselves. There is always room to improve, but I am confident that the Cyclone Family is up to the challenge. The staff and programs we have in place put us in position for another year of significant growth.”
