EHS Betsy Band Donation
Nicole Moore
Elizabethton High School is deeply grateful to Dr. Robert Sams and his family for their extraordinary generosity and continued support of the Betsy Band.
At Friday night’s EHS football game, Band Director Jonathan Valentine announced Dr. Sams’ $100,000 donation to the program — a gift that reflects his enduring belief in the power of music education and its lasting impact on students’ lives.
Press Release Announcement: A Gift to the Betsy Band
Elizabethton High School is proud to recognize Dr. Robert Sams, one of our community’s most dedicated supporters and a lifelong Cyclone fan. Dr. Sams is believed to be one of the longest-running football season ticket holders, having held tickets for more than 50 years.
A native of Gap Creek Road, Dr. Sams played the trumpet in the Elizabethton High School band during the 1950’s under the legendary Melvin Kelly. His musical journey continued at East Tennessee State University, where he played in the ETSU band. During a trip to Memphis for a football game, he had the opportunity to visit the Southern College of Optometry, a moment that changed his life forever.
Through that experience and what he describes as God’s divine intervention, Dr. Sams felt called to become an optometrist. He returned home to Carter County in the 1960’s and faithfully served this community for more than 60 years as an optometrist.
The EHS band holds a special place in Dr. Sams’ heart, as it was the path that led him to his life’s calling. Inspired by the band’s legacy and by Director Valentine’s leadership and vision in moving the program forward, Dr. Sams is making a generous donation of $100,000 to the Betsy Band.
This generous gift will help ensure that future generations of musicians experience the same opportunities that shaped his life. We thank Dr. Sams for his enduring service to the community, and love for Elizabethton High School and the Betsy Band!
